I don't know Ash, you seem to be in the minority over this one.

Jeff, I hate to pull this card, but here it goes:
You liked the Michael Bay produced remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Thus, all of your film opinions are, regrettably, invalidated.
Which means Ash can say he thinks Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties is better than Dr. Strangelove, and he will be closer to veracity than you.
My apologies, Mr. Burk.

I'm thinking about Lynch versus Cameron. Cameron did The Terminator and Aliens. I'm gonna half to go with Cameron over Lynch.
JRJ - you just want to start fights.

Haha, how about Titanic or Avatar?
Avatar was shiny. Titanic was on the other night. It seems like I always catch the scene where the boat is sinking. I wish the whole movie was just the boat sinking. They could do all sorts of cool shit with that.
What if Lynch directed Titanic? Or Kubrick directed Avatar? Damn, the possibilities.

I have the version of Titanic with the alternate ending...the ship doesn't sink. It's a little better.
Seriously, haven't seen Avatar, Philip. Titanic was about as mindblowing as it could have been, I think. I could not see Lynch doing an action film of such large scale.

I have to give the nod to Kubrick just because when I was a callow youth, he had a fairly profound influence over the way I came to think about the world (along with Vonnegut, Zappa and a handful of others).
I'll enthusiastically and without reservation list Lynch among my favorites, but he hasn't had nearly the same personal influence for me.
If I were going to list my favorite Kubrick and Lynch films, it might go something like this:
Barry Lyndon
Dr. Strangelove
Lost Highway
Eraserhead
A Clockwork Orange
Mulholland Drive
Full Metal Jacket
This would be subject to change depending on my mood, what I have or haven't seen recently, sunspot activity, and whatnot, but the top five would almost certainly be a 3-2 split and a Kubrick title would almost always be on top.
But... throw Cronenberg in and all bets are off.

District 9 blows Avatar out of the water. Fuck Avatar. I think Avatar would have made a better video game... and even then it would still be pretty lame.
...And Titanic is fuc - I’m just going to stop so I don’t say anything too unsavory.
But Bill Paxton should be castrated.

Let me just put it this way, Titanic makes Brokeback Mountain look like Fistful of Dollars.
and a serious James Cameron vs. David Lynch
You should all be ashamed.
( :
why not just say Tasaki Miike vs. Damon Wanynes?

My saying that Lynch would not have made Titanic as well as it was made says nothing about how talented I think Lynch is--just not his kind of movie and likely one he would not like to have made.
I dislike most Hollywood movies. I'd say I like about 15% of what Hollywood puts out. I'm not into action, generally, unless there is a good story, good characters, good acting, and good direction.
I love the suspense of the sinking ship in Titanic; it is very well done. Have to give credit where credit is due.
